False Anableps, Corsula Mullet or Rhinomugil corsula

Known variously as the corsula, the false anableps, or the blue anableps Rhinomugil corsula is an occasionally imported mullet from India and adjacent coastal regions east to Burma. Although sometimes found in brackish water, and able to tolerate marine conditions for short periods at least, it is more often found in freshwater. Although it has normal eyes, they are located to the top of the head, and the fish swims at the surface with the eyes above water, so in that respect it does resemble to true four-eyed fish Anableps.

Usually imported quite small, these silvery fishes get to around 30 cm in the wild, though aquarium specimens seem to stay very much smaller, around 15 cm being typical. Best kept in schools, single individuals rarely survive long. They are peaceful and very active, but apt to be bullied by territorial fishes like cichlids. Otherwise, like mullets in general, they are hardy and active fishes well suited to the large aquarium. Keep in either hard, alkaline freshwater or slightly brackish conditions up to SG 1.010.
